It's been awhile since I started making my own deodorant, but I remember thinking how cool that was. Recently, I made homemade body butter, & I'm pretty pleased with myself.
It's not perfect, but I love slathering it on. Dave & I have been using it for a couple months now. Cacao butter is delicious for nurturing summer skin. Along with cacao butter, I added coconut oil as my solid oils, & equal parts almond & apricot oil for liquids.
Our house gets warm, & our small pot upstairs is more melty than the one in the spare bathroom. I don't mind. It might be a matter of whipping it exactly, or maybe it's just hot. I predict it will hold up better in winter. I think I'll do more cacao versus coconut next batch as well. I'm going to add bergamot essential oil too; what goes well with bergamot?
I also experimented with homemade lip balm, tinted with beet juice, last month. I was in love. The texture. The subtle pop of red on my lips. Everything. Until it started growing things. Eek. (The one above hadn't started molding yet, but I threw it out too.) I've been researching how to use beet juice without much luck. I'm thinking a preservative is the answer. Grapefruit seed extract? Citric acid? I'd rather not use lipstick to tint it (especially since I don't even own lipstick) but go with something more natural instead. If you have any answers, please teach me!
